The Blackwood is burning. The Grymclaw has fallen. Vastion has been swept away by the Golden Nation. All who have not been killed are enslaved by Sheolus and his legion of Pit Striders. Rebels are few, and heroes are nonexistent. The Prophet and the Prince fight for their lives alongside the last of the Aura.

But far, far away, chained to the wall of a forgotten dungeon in the distant Golden Nation homeland, Elia Treele, the Halanyad, awakens.

She will face torture, betrayal, and soul-wrenching loss. But should she persevere… should she resist the temptations of the Pit… Vast may have one last fighting chance.

The ! fate of the world rests in her hands… and the legend continues on.
The stage is set. The First Act has ended. The deadly game has begun at last.

Elia, the Halanyad, destined to unite all nymphkind, has been captured. Gribly, the Prophet, has left his destiny behind in order to have one last, desperate chance at saving her.

Now Lauro, the disgraced prince of Vastion, is the only hero left. It will be up to him to traverse the hazards of the Blackwood and Fellmere in search of the Red Aura, Automo, who may hold the only weapon capable of sending the archdemons of the Legion back to the gates of Hell… forever.

A half-blood princess with unheard of abilities. An easy-going ranger with a mysterious weapon. A fire-breathing monster who may or may not be an ally. A one-handed Windmaster with prodigious Sky Striding power. Will their aid be enough to bring Vastion to victory? Will Lauro ever find redemption?

The old legends have! died… A new legend is rising, and it is written in blood.Grib ly is too tired to fight. After his battle with the Sea Demon, all he wants to do is rest, enjoy the hospitality of the Reethe, and perhaps even nurture a budding romance with Elia. But all his hopes are dashed when Lauro disappears; festering with a hateful secret he refuses to share with his friends. So it is reluctantly that Gribly resumes the role of prophet, placed on him unwillingly by the Aura, and goes after the errant prince. Now, though, there is no one to lead but himself...

Negotiating an deal with his old ally, retired pirate Bernarl of the Zain, Gribly sets off with Elia in tow to bring Lauro back, in chains if need be. The journey will take them to the Grymclaw, a bleak northern peninsula where one of the Aura is rumored to live... but some of the rumors say he is held captive by a dark power older than time itself.

Gribly is destined to learn his past... but he may not be able to take the truth.

Elia is destined to unite her r! ace... but she may not survive the quest.

Lauro is destined to save the world... but when he learns the price of salvation, he may not want it.

And forgotten by all, Gramling, the young Pit Strider who has plagued them from the beginning, is on the loose once more. This time, he may not be stopped. This time, he won't be seen until it's too late.

This time, the legend that may be remembered... will be the legend too grim to tell.Gribly is trying as hard as he can to rid himself of the stigma of "thief." At his side is Lauro, who seems equally ashamed of his own title: "prince." But try as they might, the two can't shake their roots...

Pursued to the great northern bay of the Inkwell, the ragged band is harried on every side by unearthly enemies who seem to find them wherever they flee. As the death toll rises, Lauro seeks help from the three tribes of nymphkind living in the bay: the Zain, who sail over the waves, the Treele, who ! swim beneath, and the Reethe, who conjure blizzards to aid the! ir army. But can any mortal stand against the tide that comes?

Demons are waking at the core of the world. Man and nymph together grow weaker as time goes on, and the guiding spirit of the Aura is nowhere to be found... except in a curiously powerful nymph girl named Elia, who may hold the key to Gribly's quest for answers and Lauro's quest for glory. But she is being hunted just as they, and time is rapidly running out for all the races of Vast...

Legends will be forged... or the world will fall to everlasting winter.A red dawn rises over Vast.

The fires of the Last War burn unabated in the homes of Avarine, Elia, and Lauro. Each is the leader of their people, but each is slowly losing their hold. As the Day of Norne draws closer, the Tannarch, the Halanyad, and the King all brace themselves for a battle.

This time, they cannot win without the help of the Aura… and the Aura have suddenly disappeared.

A new kind of Demon begin! s to terrorize the Remnant. Familiar names begin to vanish, leaving bloody trails in their wake. Traitors cloud the daytime, and shadows stalk the night. Gribly, once confident in his vocation, has begun to doubt. It will take the efforts of his estranged brother, Gramling, to save him… but Gramling wrestles with demons of his own.

Conflict is inevitable. Flight is impossible. Nothing is assured. But from the ashes of death and defeat, a new victory may become possible…

The legend ends here.

S! trong, F ixed Blade with Gut Hook Handles Tough Tasks
Sometimes even the best-made pocket knife just isn't big enough cut it out in the brush. That's where the AU-02 comes in. Thanks to a five-inch straight-edge blade and an overall length of ten inches that lets you maximize leverage while maintaining a comfortable full-hand grip, this fixed-blade knife makes quick work of even the toughest field tasks, and it's so versatile that you may just find yourself reaching for it at home too.

Its blade is crafted from 7Cr13 stainless steel for an optimal balance of value, durability, and edge retention, and a gut hook on the spine of the knife makes it ideal for field dressing.

Portable, Ergonomic Design Ensures Easy, Comfortable Use
In designing the Aura line, SOG studied the original bowie knife created by Rezin Bowie in 1838 and brought the best of that traditional design to this contemporary knife by maximizing utility, ergonomics, and safety. For the type of sure g! rip that leads to safe, accurate cuts, this Aura knife's handle combines the comfort and the nonslip properties of a textured rubber overmolding with a tough body crafted from glass-reinforced Zytel--a compound that's lightweight, abrasion resistant, and impact resistant.

The knife is shaped to sit comfortably in either your right or your left hand, and its unique blade shape provides the same safety as other knives while eliminating the need for a clunky, unwieldy crossguard. Thanks to this design and these materials, this versatile fixed-blade knife weighs in at just 5.4 ounces for enhanced portability, and it is well-balanced for further enhanced comfort and control.

Integrated Sharpener Makes an Ideal Travel Partner
A sharp blade is not just a more effective blade, it's also a safer blade. And because even the most durable edges sometimes require a touch up after a tough job is completed, this innovative field knife comes with an integrated sharper, conven! iently stored in the back of the knife's handle. Use it whenev! er and w herever you have the time to sit down and maintain your blade, and ensure that your knife is at its best the next time you reach for it.

This AU-02 Aura Fixed-Blade Hunting Knife comes with a durable nylon sheath, and it is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential), Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) and JK Simmons (Thank You For Smoking, Spiderman 1-3) star in this intriguing thriller about a man whose life spins out of control after psychic tells him his days are numbered. After his car breaks down in a desolate town, a slick salesman, Jimmy Starks (Pearce), visits a fortune teller (Simmons) to kill some time. But the psychic’s ominous reading sends Jimmy’s life into a tailspin when he learns that his life will soon end, but he is safe at least, until the first snow of the season. Now, with his ultimate fate looming nearer, Jimmy becomes obsessed with revisiting his past in hopes of changing his destiny before it’s ! too late. With a thriller as low-key as First Snow, dynamic acting is a must. Fortunately, Guy Pearce (Memento) owns the screen as slick salesman Jimmy Starks. In his first film, Oscar-nominated writer Mark Fergus (Children of Men) forgoes visual effects in favor of an increasingly complex narrative. As in many Stephen King novels, the story centers on the collision between a man of reason and a man of faith--in the supernatural, that is. The foreshadowing begins when Starks visits fortune teller Vacaro (J.K. Simmons, Spider-Man). Starks assumes he's a fellow hustler. Then his every prediction comes true. On a return trip, Vacaro tells him he'll be dead by first snow, but can't say how or when. Should Starks put his affairs in order, enjoy his time with girlfriend Deirdre (Piper Perabo), or just do nothing? Then again, snow seems unlikely for Albuquerque. Over the next few days, several possible culprits come to light, like Andy (Rick Gonzalez), ! an assistant Starks fired, and Vince (Shea Wigham), a partner ! he sold down the river. Convinced one of them is going to seek revenge, Starks becomes so paranoid he opens the door to disaster. Fergus excels in keeping the tension at a low boil, but he undersells the climax. Still, it's a nice change from all the mysteries that build in intensity before collapsing in a heap of improbabilities. First Snow is rooted in the real world from the first frame to the last. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The first snow has fallen.

with Grandma and Grandpa.
But at the top of the hill,
who will go first?
Bitty, the smallest mouse,

When she tries,

she finds that sledding is the best!

Caldecott Medalist Emily Arnold McCully captured the chills and thrills of a first sled ride when first snow was published in 1985. She has added words and created new pictures for this handsome larger edition, a companion! to picnic.

JACKIE ISN'T FIGHTING FOR GLORY. SHE'S FIGHTING FOR RESPECT.INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY, JACKIE IS A SASSY, BRASSY BOXINGMANAGER-IN-THE-MAKING DETERMINED TO CHANGE 'LETHAL' LUTHER SHAW FROM A MERE STREET PUNK INTO A WORLD CLASS PRIZEFIGHTER.The "Rocky" formula nearly wears out its welcome in "Against the Ropes", a highly fictionalized feel-good drama based on the life of pioneering female boxing promoter Jackie Kallen. In an egregious effort to distill the essence of Kallen's achievement, director Charles S. Dutton (who fared better with HBO's "The Corner") has strictly played it safe, delivering a foregone conclusion almost from the very first scene. Burdened with a by-th! e-numbers screenplay by Cheryl Edwards ("Save the Last Dance"), the film gets a much-needed boost from Meg Ryan, playing Kallen as a brassy, smoky-voiced dynamo, rising to the challenge when a rival promoter (played with fierce bravado by Tony Shalhoub) dares her to play hardball in a male-dominated sport. Jackie's trump cards are Luther (Omar Epps), a promising contender with untried talent, and a once-legendary trainer (played by director Dutton) coaxed out of retirement to guide Luther to the middleweight championship. No surprises here, just a handful of energetic performances, an abundance of raw ambition, obligatory setbacks, and the nagging feeling that you've seen it all before. From the critically acclaimed author whom The Wall Street Journal called "a first-class historian," here is a riveting account of one of the most spectacular rescue operations in history. On January 30, 1945, American troops staged a successful raid on Cabanatuan, a notorious Japanese POW camp where thousands of prisoners had been tortured and died. Based on interviews with the heroes who survived the raid, this book brings to life in electrifying detail the dramatic events that took place on that historic day.

Praise for William B. Breuer and his books

"A first-class historian." --The Wall Street Journal

"Fast-paced, detailed, and satisfyingly dramatic." --World War II Magazine o! n Devil Boats

"Another smasher by Breuer, who specializes in thrilling reports of WWII spycraft and warfare." --Kirkus Reviews on Race to the Moon

"Vivid . . . skillfully written." --Los Angeles Times on Retaking the Philippines

"Brings to life how airborne soldiers survived, how the human will prevails . . . against overwhelming enemies, tactical failures, and even death."--The New York Times on Geronimo: American Paratroopers in World War II

Early on the morning of January 28, 1945, a small detachment of volunteers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry A. Mucci, leader of the 6th Ranger Battalion, embarked from their base in the Philippines on the most audacious rescue operation ever undertaken. Their objective: Penetrate thirty miles behind enemy lines and liberate 511 POWs from Cabanatuan, the notorious Japanese POW camp where thousands of American prisoners had been brutally tortured and killed. Little did Mucci's Rangers know when t! hey got under way that morning that over the next few days and! nights they would be making history.

Written by acclaimed military historian William B. Breuer, The Great Raid on Cabanatuan is a riveting account of that rescue mission and the gallant soldiers who carried it out against overwhelming odds. Based largely on interviews with the heroes who survived the operation, and featuring twenty-eight previously unpublished photographs--many of them taken while the raid was in progress--it brings to life in electrifying detail the dramatic events that took place on the night of the raid, January 30, and during the harrowing days that followed.

In sketching out the many roads that led to Cabanatuan, Breuer brilliantly combines oral history with dramatic narrative to bring to life some of the most spectacular events of the war in the Pacific. We relive the hellish battles for Bataan and Corregidor, where in 1942 American and Filipino soldiers fought bravely to hold back the Japanese invasion force. We experience firsthand the horrors! of the Bataan Death March on which tens of thousands of prisoners lost their lives en route to Cabanatuan. And we learn of the American underground and guerilla operations in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation from the men and women behind them, including Margaret Utinsky, leader of "Miss U's underground," and Claire Phillips, the glamorous lounge singer turned spy- master.

A gripping chronicle of one of the most harrowing rescue missions ever undertaken as told in all its gritty detail by the heroes who made it happen, The Great Raid on Cabanatuan is both a first-class piece of military scholarship and a thrilling adventure story.

Hot leading man Rupert Everett (AN IDEAL HUSBAND, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING) stars in a sexy thriller that's all about jealousy, passion, revenge ... and a woman compelled to live her life on the edge! Tired of criminal activity, a wild and beautiful thief named B. (Asia Argento -- QUEEN MARGOT) begins to seek a way out of her dangerous profession. While trying to kick her addiction to crime, she finds love and a stable relationship with a naive schoolteacher (Jared Harris -- I SHOT ANDY WARHOL) ... until the dark secrets from B.'s past begin to creep into her new life! As ex-partners Paul (Everett) and Bruno (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers -- MICHAEL COLLINS) get back in the picture, B.'s harrowing balancing act threatens to c! ome crashing down!Director Michael Radford made a surprising about-face from his international hit Il Postino to this grungy British romantic crime thriller. Asia Argento (Dario's daughter and costar of Abel Ferrara's New Rose Hotel) is the title character, a street criminal whose specialty is breaking and entering: "I can get into anywhere." Jared Harris (Richard's son and Andy Warhol in I Shot Andy Warhol) is a bookish, shy schoolteacher with a yen for jazz who becomes smitten with Argento's sexy wildcat. Argento brings a vitality to the supercharged street thief trying to break with her past, but stick-in-the-mud Harris is restrained to a fault and Radford never quite finds the right chemistry to make their union any more than curious. Rupert Everett costars as a smart-mouthed, sleepy-eyed ne'er-do-well whose drug habit puts him deep in debt, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is Argento's volatile partner, a jittery young punk on a hair trigger. Radford has m! ore fun with the villains than his ostensible hero; the film b! ubbles w hen they're on screen and the movie's single heist scene is a short, sharp, energized shot in the arm to a slowing story. Only Harris sticks out as an impossibly resolute saint who's dedicated his life to a passionate sinner. The conclusion reverberates with echoes of Straw Dogs, as remade by a kinder, gentler filmmaker. --Sean Axmaker Rupert Everett stars in this sexy thriller that's all about jealousy, passion, revenge and a woman compelled to live her life on the edge.

Clash of the Gods: 3 - Disc Set

  • Reacquaint yourself with myths so powerful that they remain woven into the fabric of the present world, resonating with real-life relevance.Thousands of years ago, they were used to help frame the world of the ancients, and dictate the guidelines of their societies. Today, they are often the first stories we learn as children, iconic tales where good and evil clash, and humanity and fantasy collid
Ian McKellen delivers a riveting award-winning performance as Hollywood horror director James Whale. It's 1957 and Whale's heyday as the director of Frankenstein Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man is long behind him. Adapted and directed by Bill Condon from Christopher Bram's novel Father of Frankenstein, the film stars Ian McKellen in a sublime performance as the white-haired Whale, who is portrayed as a dapper gent and amateur artist prompted by failing health into mela! ncholy remembrance of things past. Flashbacks of lost love, Wo! rld War  I battle trauma, and glory days in Hollywood combine with Whale's present-day attraction to a newly hired yard worker (Brendan Fraser) whose hunky, Frankenstein-like physique makes him an ideal model for Whale's fixated sketching.

The friendship between the handsome gardener and his elderly gay admirer is by turns tenuous, humorous, mutually beneficial, and ultimately rather sad--but to Condon's credit Whale is never seen as pathetic, lecherous, or senile. Equally rich is the rapport between Whale and his long-time housekeeper (played with wry sarcasm by Lynn Redgrave), who serves as protector, mother, and even surrogate spouse while Whale's mental state deteriorates. Flashbacks to Whale's filmmaking days are painstakingly authentic (particularly in the casting of look-alike actors playing Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester), and all of these ingredients combine to make Gods and Monsters (executive produced by horror novelist-filmmaker Clive Barker) a touchingly ! affectionate film that succeeds on many levels. A James Bond-style action-adventure film for the tween and teen set based on Anthony Horowitz's book "Stormbreaker," Alex Rider--Operation Stormbreaker is a fast-paced action film shot in and around London that's bursting with suspense, intrigue, high-tech gadgetry, martial arts moves, and intense chase scenes featuring everything from cars and motorbikes to helicopters, quad bikes, bicycles, and horses. Alex! Rider (Alex Pettyfer) thinks he's just an ordinary 14-year ol! d kid, b ut when the uncle that raised him (Ewan McGregor) dies, he soon discovers that his uncle led a secret life as an intelligence agent and that he was secretly grooming Alex for a similar future with special intelligence division MI6. Motivated by revenge against his uncle's killers, Alex takes up where his uncle left off in the investigation of computer mogul Darrius Sayle (Mickey Rourke), delving into his seemingly philanthropic plan to supply a whole new breed of laptops to school children throughout the United Kingdom. Alex's undercover investigation quickly reveals Sayle's true motive and, without any real support or protection from his MI6 supervisors Alan Blunt (Bill Nighy) or Mrs. Jones (Sophie Okonedo) or his quirky housekeeper Jack Starbright (Alicia Silverstone), Alex must somehow prevail against the dangerous Mr. Sayle to safeguard the lives of thousands of innocent people. Comparable to Spy Kids and a step above Agent Cody Banks, Alex Rider--Opera! tion Stormbreaker is an intense, believable film that will captivate viewers ages 10 and older. Bonus features include featurettes focusing on making the book into a film with author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, the extensive stunt work performed, the logistics involved in shooting a horse chase through Hyde Park and Piccadilly, visual effects by Baseblack, casting Alex, and the choreography of martial arts master Donnie Yen. --Tami HoriuchiYou're never too young todare.ProductInformationIn Alex Rider - Operation Stormbreaker you'll enter the world of AlexRider an ordinary teenager trained to be the ultimate spy. A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the add! iction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else."This text is for the introductory course in a hospitality management program that covers dining room and banquet management.
